Frequently asked questions

How do I know which government exams I am eligible for?

Eligibility depends on four things: your highest qualification (and sometimes your subjects and marks), your age on the cut-off date in the notification, your category for age relaxation, and your state for state government jobs. Our free career check matches all four against current rules for central and state exams.

What is the age relaxation for OBC, SC and ST in government jobs?

In central government jobs, OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates get 3 extra years, SC and ST candidates 5 extra years, and candidates with a benchmark disability 10 extra years (13 for OBC, 15 for SC/ST). EWS candidates get no age relaxation. Defence entries such as NDA and Agniveer give no category relaxation.

On which date is my age counted?

On the cut-off date given in each notification, not the exam date. SSC usually counts age on 1 August (1 January for some exams), UPSC Civil Services on 1 August of the exam year, and Railway notifications on 1 January or 1 July.

Is a distance or online degree valid for government jobs?

Yes, if the university and programme are recognised by the UGC and its Distance Education Bureau. Under the UGC's 2020 regulations these degrees are equal to regular degrees for jobs. Professional degrees also need approval from their own regulator, such as AICTE or NCTE.

Can I apply for jobs in another state?

For General posts, usually yes, though many states test their own language. Reservation and age relaxation for SC, ST, OBC and EWS usually apply only to that state's residents, so reserved candidates from outside compete as General.

Which government jobs have no written exam?

India Post Gramin Dak Sevak (selected on Class 10 marks) and Railway Act Apprentice posts (selected on Class 10 and ITI marks) are the main ones. Nearly all other permanent government posts need a written or computer-based exam.
